naturally we think first of Roscoe’s House of Chicken ’n Waffles. But a bird should stand on its own, and imagining a Roscoe’s platter without the waffle is impossible. Some swear by the thighs at Kyochon in Koreatown, but the candy-sweet fare there is enough to make you worry about the world’s dwindling corn syrup reserves. Sweet and salty collide in harmony at Honey’s Kettle Fried Chicken. Golden, wavy shards of skin cocoon the moistest (and largest) thighs and breasts in town. This squeaky-clean joint sits on…read full article

The breasts and thighs on display resemble golden shards knocked loose from some mother lode of fried chicken at its most absolute. They’re served old style—beneath yellow parchment paper in cardboard boxes—along with biscuits and fries or corn on the cob. But the fried coating is what sets this place apart. It’s hard, chewy, sweet, and salty, like something your grandma once enjoyed at a state fair, and about as cheap..…read full article

SWEET POTATO PIE: The pie scene in Los Angeles gets its shout-outs -- hasn't House of Pies been mentioned in about a dozen songs? -- and we all have our spots for raisin rum or pecan or banana. Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken in Culver City has the sweet potato we're particularly sweet on. They come in small sizes, too. All that beta carotene…read full article

Clues around the cream and gold dining room indicate the food is going to be special. That pile of lemons in the corner will be squeezed for the lemonade. The copper and steel oven behind the register turns out small fruit pies, and fluffy buttermilk biscuits. Fried chicken is Honey's claim to fame: it's battered lightly for an airy crust, and the meat runs with juices. Combo meals are available, as are individual chicken parts, whole fried birds, and catfish. The vegetables skewered and kettle cooked, are also top drawer.

When I first took a gander inside Honey’s Kettle Fried Chicken in Culver City, I was a little taken aback because the crowd didn’t look exactly like people who would be eating fried chicken. They looked more like people who would rather go somewhere like Rush Street or Ford’s Filling Station. Nevertheless, I had heard good things, so I went in.
A quick look at the menu revealed a wide range of non-vegetable fried options that I could enjoy, except that they all seemed to come with pickles. I decided on the three piece breast strip meal, which came with fries, a biscuit and pickles. I ordered without the pickles and asked the cashier why it was called “Honey’s Kettle,” thinking there was somehow honey involved…read full article

When you think of LA for eating, you probably think of stereotypes: a tofu-eating, wheatgrass-shooting, sushi-slamming yogi, or an I-order-but-I-don't-eat "actor." I'm not saying that we don't have those here because sometimes, when I've missed a few of my own therapy sessions, even I slip into LA-ness, but that's not what it's all about. There are quite a few super-steak houses, big-ass barbecue joints, and...fried chicken. Culver City is like a mini entertainment industry mecca, with Sony's corporate HQ towering over downtown and studios and lots surrounding. You would think there would be more sushi joints to cater, but no, on a weekday afternoon, which joint is practically bursting at the seams with power lunch-ers? Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken, a small family-owned restaurant that serves up good, greasy, but oh-so-tasty home cooked fried chicken…read full article
